Penile Implants Q & A

What is a penile implant?

A penile implant is a device that restores your ability to have an erection. They’re available as a malleable penile prosthesis as well as inflatable penile pumps. Inflatable penile pumps are available in two and three-piece options. Dr. Eid performs over 300 penile implant surgeries every year and provides customized advice on which type of penile implant will best address your needs.

Penile implants provide a solution if you have permanent erectile dysfunction, penile deformity, or if medical treatments for erectile dysfunction don’t work or cause intolerable side effects. If you’ve had surgery for prostate, bladder, or colon cancer that left you unable to achieve an erection, a penile prosthesis or penile pump can restore your ability to have an erection and engage in sexual intercourse. Additionally, penile implants are suitable if you have vascular disease-related erectile dysfunction.

What should I expect while getting a penile implant?

Dr. Eid has performed over 6,000 penile implant procedures in his career. He provides comprehensive presurgical consultations to determine which type of implant is right for you. Some of the many factors he considers include:

  • Your age
  • Overall penis size
  • The ratio between your crus (internal) and pendulous (external) penis
  • Presence of any deformity (Peyronie’s disease)
  • Previous abdominal surgery
  • Penile curvature
  • Your overall health

Dr. Eid uses regional anesthesia and intravenous sedation during the procedure, so you sleep comfortably through the outpatient surgery. In most cases, Dr. Eid inserts your penile implant through a minimally invasive single incision in the seam of your scrotum. This approach allows the greatest access to your penile tissue and maximizes penile length while reducing your risk of scarring, resulting in the desired cosmetic penile appearance. Nothing is removed from the penis or scrotum to insert a penile implant, so sensation, orgasm, and partial erectile function are preserved.

Dr. Eid also developed the No-Touch technique to reduce your risk of infection. The method allows him to insert the penile prosthesis, whether you have a malleable device or inflatable penile pump, without touching your skin. This approach results in a postoperative infection rate of less than 0.5%, which is the lowest in the world, while other techniques have infection rates of up to 5%. Dr. Eid is also one of the only doctors who tracks, updates, and posts his infection data for full transparency.

What should I expect while recovering from penile implant surgery?

Dr. Eid gives you customized aftercare instructions when he releases you after your surgery. As with any surgery, postoperative bruising and swelling are to be expected. Dr. Eid prescribes medication to help you manage pain.

You should limit physical activity as much as possible for the first 48 hours after your surgery and spend that time resting flat on your back in bed. You can take three gentle 15-minute walks per day. Dr. Eid uses non-absorbable sutures to enable patients to take two to three hour-long soothing hot baths per day starting on the third day. You can also start inflating your implant while in the bath at that time.

If you’re a local patient, you may have a follow-up appointment approximately two weeks after your implant surgery, where Dr. Eid can remove your stitches and check on your recovery, though it’s not entirely necessary. With Dr. Eid, you can also call by phone or by video, from the comfort of your home, for a follow-up consultation. Nonlocal patients can have their sutures removed by a local nurse or physician. Most patients can resume sexual activity as early as three weeks after their surgery.
