Dr. Eid’s particular interest in minimally invasive technique (smallest incision) and in infection prevention (“No-Touch” technique) has encouraged many patients that have had an infected or malfunctioning implant done elsewhere to seek his expertise. Although this was not the initial intended objective of the “No-Touch” technique, since Dr. Eid’s main interest was in the prevention rather than treatment of infected implants, this motivated him to focus his attention on the treatment of failed implant cases. Hence over the years he has acquired a vast and unparalleled experience in the repair and revisions of infected and malfunctioning implants. Because of his determination in helping men that were told that nothing further could be done, he also has developed many instruments, techniques and protocols to assist in these difficult surgeries and to maximize chances of a successful outcome.

Repair and revisions often require a thorough evaluation of the following:

  • past surgical history
  • the type and size of previous device implanted
  • type of surgical approach
  • a complete physical examination
  • diagnostic tests such as ultrasound, CAT scan and cystoscopy

After review and evaluation, a surgical strategy tailored to each individual case is formulated, and a thorough discussion implemented with the patient outlining risks, benefits and chances for success.

What to expect

Most often than not, several procedures at timed intervals (usually 3 months or more) with placement of temporary semi-malleable implants may be required in order to maximize size, girth, correct penile deformity and minimize surgical complications. Finally it is important for patients to be cognizant that there are limitations to the regaining of penile size due to scar tissue formation, and that the main objective is to obtain a functional erection. It is therefore important to have realistic expectations. As is the case for most surgical procedures, the first or initial operation is always the easiest. All subsequent repairs and revisions are more complicated and require additional surgical time and especially a more experienced surgeon. Also and because of the delicate and mechanical nature of the inflatable penile implant, this type of procedure works best if it is done well the first time. All subsequent revisions give a less than desirable outcome due to the formation of scar tissue, shortening of penis, and areas of numbness.Unfortunately many are unaware of this fact until an infection or complications occur. It is only then that patients become motivated to further educate themselves on the topic, travel and seek a most experienced physician such as Dr. Eid.

Although the argument that “it is best to have one’s surgery close to one’s home in case of a complication” seems logical at first, further deliberation can instead lead one to realize that seeking the best surgeon to prevent a complication is a much wiser approach.

Inflation/Deflation after Removal and Replacement of an Infected Penile Implant

Dr. J. Francois Eid goes through the placement and removal of a malleable implant following an infection. The malleable is then replaced with a three-piece penile implant with a great outcome and you can see the patient inflating and deflating the implant.
