Benign prostate enlargement, also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), is a common men’s health issue that occurs when your prostate is larger than normal and compresses your urethra. In its earliest stages, benign prostate enlargement doesn’t necessarily cause any symptoms. However, as your prostate continues to grow and your urethra narrows, you may develop symptoms including:
If you develop any of these symptoms, make an appointment with Dr. Eid. While most of the time, benign prostate enlargement is the cause, prostate cancer can cause similar symptoms.
Men have two stages of prostate growth. The first occurs when you reach puberty. Then starting in your twenties, your prostate starts a more gradual growth phase that doesn’t end. As you age, your risk of developing symptomatic benign prostate enlargement increases. Additionally, if you have a family history of prostate enlargement, your chances of experiencing similar men’s health issues are higher.
At Advanced Urological Care PC, Dr. Eid provides thorough exams and testing to identify an enlarged prostate. He talks to you about your symptoms, general health, and lifestyle and orders tests, including urine flow studies, digital rectal examinations, prostate-specific antigen tests, and rectal ultrasounds.
Treatment for benign prostate enlargement depends on the severity of your symptoms. Dr. Eid offers a variety of nonsurgical treatments as well as minimally invasive and other surgical procedures. For example, if you have mild symptoms, Dr. Eid may recommend watchful waiting or medication such as alpha-blocker drugs and alpha-reductase inhibitors to slow or stop prostate growth.
However, if your symptoms are more severe, Dr. Eid also offers minimally invasive procedures, including the highly effective and innovative minimally invasive Urolift procedure. Dr. Eid also places the UroLift® device in a minimally invasive procedure. The UroLift device lifts your prostate to relieve urethral compression and obstruction without the need for surgery.
In very severe cases, Dr. Eid can surgically remove your prostate or perform a transurethral resection to remove the inner part of your prostate that’s compressing your urethra. He may recommend GreenLight™ laser surgery as an alternative to traditional transurethral resection of the prostate.
If you have symptoms of benign prostate enlargement, call Advanced Urological Care PC or request an appointment online for expert diagnosis and treatment.
