3. Experienced OR Staff

An often overlooked advantage that AUC benefits from is that by bringing a high volume of the same procedure (in this case penile and urethral prosthesis) to a hospital or surgery center, the OR staff, anesthesiologist and nurses managing and caring for men undergoing the implant procedure also become very experienced. For example timing of intravenous antibiotic prior to the procedure is crucial to fight possible infection. Our instruments are not re-sterilized by the OR staff, in-between cases, in the OR autoclave, and of course never used for other minor urological procedures such as circumcisions. This would not be the case in an institution where this procedure is not performed often. 



Another ignored benefit of a “high volume” of procedures is the creation of special “Penile Prosthesis Packs.” By teaming up with surgical suppliers such as Cardinal, our team has created these packs specifically for our institutions, which include every single disposable item needed for the IPP procedure. (Whenever possible reusable items such as bowls and instruments are substituted for disposable ones). This reduces OR circulation, possible bacterial contamination and duration of the procedure. 

Finally a huge inventory of every brand of prosthesis is always available for every case and therefore we do not compromise on the size or types of device based on availability, or rely on the delivery of a specific brand of implant by a company representative at the time of the procedure.
